What is Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the Science of realigning teeth into a more natural, functional and aesthetic position. This can happen on both dental arches or just in some dental  areas.

There are many reasons why teeth become aligned or misaligned as we grow, and throughout our lives.

1- During growth. We are all born with a body whose shape is the result of the mixing over the generations of all the genes inherited from our ancestors, both on the maternal and paternal side. It is unpredictable to know exactly what the teeth of our children and grandchildren will look like until we reach a young age in which it begins to be evident how the shape of their skull and face is developing and how the teeth tend to erupt and to arrange on both dental arches. This means that only after a few years of life can one begin to make predictions based on clinical evidence which, however, can change without absolute certainties. Around the age of 5-6, milk teeth (deciduous teeth), begin to lose and permanent teeth begin to emerge. Around that age it is advisable to take your children to a Doctor in Dental Medicine Specialist in Orthodontics, to understand if, how and when you can or should intervene to help find an ideal functional and aesthetic position for the teeth that have yet to emerge. This will help our children throughout their lives to chew better, speak better, smile better, and brush their teeth better. Having fewer problems, this will save them painful situations and money with problems that could have been avoided.

2- During life. Teeth always move throughout our lives, it is a normal and natural phenomenon due to many causes. However, the fastest cause is the loss of one or more teeth. In these cases both the teeth close to the now empty part, and the teeth of the opposite dental arch (antagonists), all together, and some more, others less, begin to move because they are no longer stabilized by the contact they had with the lost tooth that helped them maintain their position. Some of them will tend to occupy the space left by the lost tooth, others will move differently depending on the case, and this will begin to create alterations in the way the teeth close, with progressive and increasingly evident functional and aesthetic problems. The more time passes, the worse it gets. In those cases in which one or more teeth have already moved, Orthodontics can put them back in their original position, or improve their position and thus allow a general realignment and the recreation of the original space left by the lost tooth. This space will be necessary for the positioning of an implant or a so-called "bridge", both of which are now routine prosthetic therapies that allow the construction of a new tooth to replace the lost one. It must be remembered that the greater the number of teeth lost, the greater and more complex the displacement of all others that remain becomes, and the more necessary and rapid the need for Orthodontics and/or Prosthetic Reconstructions will be. If you lose a tooth, it must be replaced as soon as possible to avoid further problems that involve all the others and that "always" follow its loss.

Pediatric Dental Medicine

It is the science dedicated to the care of children's mouth and teeth.

Unfortunately for the whole family, many parents do not know how to care for their children's mouths and teeth. To this problem are sometimes added those created by grandparents, uncles, friends and similar who often make matters worse by giving sweets and sweets with harmful affection which nourish billions of bacteria in an already unclean mouth and in a body. growing and with immune defenses not yet well developed. For these reasons, both deciduous baby teeth and permanent teeth can decay easily, cause discomfort or pain.

To overcome these problems:

1- In the case of milk teeth, they should always be brushed, kindly teaching the little ones to brush them perhaps together with Mum and Dad, and if necessary they should be treated to remove the cavity and reconstruct them in various ways. It would also be useful to never send children to bed by giving them sweets, milk, milk and honey, as unfortunately many still do to make them fall asleep. That is an immense gift to the bacteria that will party during their sleep!

2- It is also strongly recommended that the new molars, and sometimes also the permanent premolars, are protected with "SEALINGS", i.e. through the use of a resin filler which crystallizes and seals all the grooves present on the chewing surface. This prevents bacteria from hiding there for a long time and entering and decaying the teeth more easily.

3- We must remember that in the most unfortunate cases where there are cavities, the teeth must be treated as soon as possible to eliminate the bacteria that are destroying them, and then rebuild them.
